Woman Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Assault Dies
The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The victim, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 21:00 GMT Friday evening, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
Originally charged of attempted murder however after the woman's death charges were upgraded to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said officers would be around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response when she finished her work period around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as extremely disorderly, adding that co-workers reported hearing a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our security is compromised essentially, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.
"She doesn't drive employed at major concert locations... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's horrible."
