Trump Administration Ready to Deploy Dozens Federal Agents to San Francisco

The federal government was preparing on Wednesday to deploy scores of federal agents to the northern California for a major crackdown on immigration, sparking criticism from California leaders.

Specifics of the Operation

Details of the operation were still emerging, but it will reportedly include over a hundred federal agents, based on information. The agents are scheduled to begin using the US Coast Guard base in across the bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It was still uncertain whether military personnel would join the operation.

Political Backlash

The mission follows an extended period of warnings by the president to take action against the liberal city. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the action, calling it “right out of the autocrat's manual”.

“He dispatches masked men, he dispatches customs officers, he sends out federal agents, he creates anxiety and fear in the neighborhood so that he can lay claim for solving that by dispatching the national guard,” he declared. “This is no different than the incendiary extinguishing the blaze.”

Municipal Preparation

San Francisco is the latest major city targeted by Donald Trump’s campaign of large-scale detentions. The mission is likely to cause a confrontation between the administration and city officials who have vowed to stop armed border control in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for months for Trump to carry out repeated threats to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday media briefing, San Francisco’s city leader emphasized that the city was prepared.

“During this period, we have been anticipating the possibility of some kind of national intervention in our city,” said the mayor, adding that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s assistance to our immigrant communities, and make certain our offices are organized before any federal deployment.”

Judicial Context

Regardless of court battles to deployments in a several municipalities, including Illinois, Oregon and Los Angeles, Trump has declared “absolute authority” to deploy the military forces in cities, pointing to the Insurrection Act which permits presidents certain rights to dispatch personnel on US soil.

Community Preparation

Newsom – who was formerly as San Francisco’s chief executive – had committed to intervene “immediately” to a deployment in the city. “The notion that the White House can dispatch personnel into our cities with no justification based on facts, no monitoring, no accountability, no consideration of local authority – it constitutes an attack on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.

Local organizations, including civil rights groups formed in the initial federal leadership, have organized to quickly mobilize a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at community centers.

Community Impact

In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a mostly Latin American population, elected official stated to media last week she and her constituents had been bracing for this time. “The moment that employees avoid workplaces, when people of color are afraid to go outdoors without the apprehension of government officers targeting based on race and detaining them, the time when families keep children home, become too afraid to go to the grocery store or physician,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is fundamentally a closure the extent of which we have not witnessed since the pandemic.”

State Troops Condition

Roughly three hundred out of several thousand regional state soldiers stay under federal control under an order from Trump. Roughly several hundred of them had been sent to the Pacific Northwest, where they were remaining in uncertainty in the midst of a judicial dispute over their assignment.

This week, Newsom said he had called the state military personnel under his control to staff charity kitchens amid the administrative stoppage.
