Top-Flight Updates: Hannibal Suspended for Spitting; City Boss Insists 'Defence Has to Improve'

From the world of English football news, a significant player was handed a significant suspension, a head coach has pointed to a defender's errors to prove an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline improvements following an erratic victory.

1. Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-game ban and a financial fine for improper behaviour in a recent fixture against Leeds United. The governing body confirmed Mejbri was referred an independent regulatory commission after an incident of spitting towards visiting fans around the 67th mark of a 2-0 win by Burnley.

A release explained: “A disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct during the top-flight game against Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that the player behaved in breach of the rules of the game and/or in a poor way by using offensive and/or unacceptable conduct by spitting at or in the area of Leeds United supporters.”

It added, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, and the panel imposed a four-match suspension and a fine after a hearing. The panel's full explanation for its decisions will be published in due course.” The team, now in 19th place in the table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.

Maresca Points to Tosin's Errors to Prove an Argument

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has stated that not having experience is not an issue at team, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from playing a bad game during the loss against Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who manages the youngest squad in the Premier League, does not feel that inexperience played a part in their setback. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's oldest outfield player on the pitch, who produced an error-strewn display at the back.

“We always mention a lack of experience when we drop points,” the coach stated. “After we beat Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, no one was talking about experienced personnel. I understand that if we lose, we are constantly looking for the reason why, but I think why we lost to Leeds was not down to inexperience, it’s because we were not good enough.”

He added, “Who was the most senior player on our team in the match? It was Tosin. Did he play any good? Therefore, it’s not about experience. It’s about those 11 men, they were simply not good enough.”

Guardiola Insists Defence 'Has to Get Better'

The Manchester City manager has insisted his team have taken lessons from their recent scare against Fulham with the game is now in the past. City held on to claim a 5-4 victory during a incredible clash on Tuesday, having led 5-1 with almost 60 minutes gone.

Coming after they fought off a fightback to win 3-2 in the previous game, prompting further doubts regarding whether they possess resilient required to mount a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable lessons, hopefully. At this level, for every team, one must learn from what happens performances and bad things and think of what's next.”

“Of course I am worried,” he admitted. “We try to analyse what happened, to not concede so many goals. After conceding three scored by Leeds, and five goals against Fulham it shows our sides, correct? So, we have we have done plenty of good things. But how many shots on target had Leeds have? Three? Scored two. That ratio is bad. And attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded is too high. We have to be better.”

4. Newcastle Prioritise on Livramento and Botman Contracts

The Magpies' recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and is pleased that midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a contract extending until 2029 with an option until 2030.

This allows Wilson to focus on negotiations with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, Newcastle's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.

“The initial few days in the job was when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was significantly more secure than the one I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s well known that we would want to renew Tino’s contract and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s too. These talks are ongoing.”

Manager Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the home game against Burnley this Saturday, and he likely to remain sidelined for another week.

5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Returns Against Brighton

West Ham head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to the starting lineup when they play Brighton this Sunday, after serving his suspension following a sending-off against Liverpool.

“That incident is behind us,” Nuno said. “I am confident it won't happen again as he himself admitted his mistake. We discussed it in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and it will not happen again.”

He also acknowledged the intense strain facing his team, currently 18th ahead of the weekend matches. “We can't avoid it,” he said. “It is the situation. We have to confront it. We're battling for our top-flight status. We can't hide it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with Striker Deputy Merino

Mikel Merino may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward even when the club's usual frontmen return from injury. Merino has been deployed as a makeshift number nine due to injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino found the net for Arsenal’s first goal versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second goal during a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
